Obesity Rates Getting Worse

July 3rd, 2009

A new report on obesity in the United States shows that obesity rates are getting worse. Obesity rates went up in 23 states and went down in no states. 34.3% of Americans are obese and 32.7% are overweight. That compares with 15% in 1980. The Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation compiled this report. The goal of the Department of Health and Human Services was to reduce obesity rates in all 50 states to 15% before 2010. Ooops.

Obesity linked to Ovarian Cancer

January 11th, 2009

A new study out had linked obesity to ovarian cancer.  The study claims double the risk for older obese women compared to average weight citizens.  The obesity rates in America are certainly a concern when it comes to these consequences of being overweight. Not to mention the extreme cost of health care for a society so overweight.

Can Taxes Help Improve Obesity Rates?

December 30th, 2008

New York state governor David Patterson wants to place an obesity tax on non-diet soft drinks and fruit drinks (only those less than 70% real fruit juice).  The problem really is one of money for New York state and not obesity, which in lies the issue.  Patterson is simply looking to make up the state’s budget short fall.  As always, this type of tax will hurt the poor the most.  Some will argue that the monetary pain will be enough to convince many state residents, mainly the poor ones, not to purchase these ‘empty calories.’  However, it provides no guarantee that these calories will not be replaced with other cheap empty calorie options.  Let’s tackle obesity rates, but let’s do it in the right way.

Obesity Rates

December 30th, 2008

When it comes to the world that we live in, we are surrounded by a society that is severely obese, and the obesity rates just keep rising as the years go by.  Now, there are many causes to the reasons why we are a obese society, and the factors that are contributing to these reasons.

Now, while we would all love to blame the fast food industries for the reason why we are such a huge society, but the fact of the matter is we have full control over what we put into our mouths, which means we do not have to eat those burgers and fries.

There are over 50 million people that are overweight and about 40 million that are obese.  Think about that amount for a minute, and think about all of those people.  These obese people are not just adults, there are children that are obese as well and the obesity rate among children is rising quite quickly.

Think about what can happen if you do not start taking the steps to becoming healthy and you become one of the millions of people that are overweight, do you really want to add to the millions, or do you want to decrease that amount of people, by taking the right steps towards a healthier lifestyle?  Being obese can lead to severe heart attacks, diabetes, and eventually death.  So before any of this happens to you, take a step back and see what you can do, obesity rates are rising the sooner we can acknowledge this fact, the better.

Obesity Rates 2008

December 30th, 2008

Well, the year of 2008 is coming to a close, and most of us like to talk about the amount of money that we have made or the things that we have aquired over the last year.  But we are not going to talk about money, or cars, nothing like that, we are going to talk about the obesity rates in 2008.

Over the last year, the obesity rates within the United States has risen nearly 3%!  Now, think about how many people actually live in the United States, and think about the amount of people that are now considered obese.

If you think about it this way, as the years go by, there are going to be more and more obese people.  If we do not start taking care of ourselves we are going to run into some serious problems! As the year comes to a close, Mississippi has been name the fattest state in the U.S. and this is the the third straight year in a row that Mississippi has been awarded the title.

Just think about it, instead of obesity rates falling year after year, obesity rates are actually increasing and the numbers and percentages are staggering. If we do not start taking care of ourselves, and start living healthier lives, the obesity rate after each year is going to be more than just 3%, think about the rate increasing to 9 or 10 percent!  Stop the trend while you can, and spread the word, get everyone involved in the fight to be obesity.
